Allergies for 1 in 4 Americans
Two new CDC reports say that almost 1 in 3 adults and more than 1 in 4 children in the U.S. have at least one allergy. Seasonal allergies are most common (19-26%), followed by eczema (7-11%) and food allergies (6%). White adults are more likely to have seasonal allergies. Black, non-Hispanic children are more likely to have a food allergy. (Source: STAT News Morning Rounds, L.Cooney, 1.26.23)
FDA Helps with Tainted Cough Syrup Investigation
The FDA is working with the WHO to investigate the source of cough syrup contamination. More than 300 children in Africa and Asia have died from acute kidney injury after taking the cough syrup tainted with either diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol. The FDA has no indication the contaminated syrups have entered the U.S. drug supply chain. (Source: Reuters, P. Wingrove, 1.25.23)
Mpox Without Sexual Transmission
A woman in her 20s who lived alone and had no sexual or close contact with anyone suspected of mpox developed a rash on her face. Mpox was confirmed. She had two massages in the two weeks prior to the rash appearing. Each time, her face rested on top of a circular pillow covered by a thin linen or towel. Contaminated material is suspected to be the source of the infection. The case appears in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. (STAT News Morning Rounds, L. Cooney, 1.26.23)
