FDA Advisory Panel Unanimous on Annual Shot

In a 21-0 vote, advisors to the FDA endorsed a plan to create a single annual COVID shot. The panelists also supported creating annual vaccines to match the circulating variants, and they were in favor of older people, immunocompromised individuals, and young children getting two doses. (STAT News, M. Herper and H. Branswell, 1.26.23)



FDA to Ease Blood Donation Restrictions

The FDA will ease restrictions on blood donation by men who have sex with men. The change will take place after a public comment period. As of 2020, the policy has been that men who have sex with men may donate if they had not had sexual contact in the three months prior. Blood banks already routinely screen for HIV. (Source: NPR, R. Mother Arrested After Death of Children

A 32-year-old mother was arrested after two of her children, ages 5 and 3, were found dead and a third, age 8 months, was flown to the hospital with traumatic injuries. The mother had attempted suicide. A motive has not been identified. The tragedy has sparked discussion about maternal mental health. (Source: WMUR, A. Mitropoulos, 1.26.23)
