Ebola Outbreak Ended

Uganda has declared the end of the Ebola outbreak. The first case was confirmed in September 2022. The last patient was released from care on November 30 when the 42-day countdown to end the outbreak began.

The numbers:

  • 164 cases

  • 55 deaths

  • 87 recovered

  • 4000 contacts followed

  • Case-fatality ratio 47%

This was the country’s first outbreak with Ebola Sudan in a decade and the fifth with this particular strain of Ebola. (Source: WHO Africa, 1.11.23)


WHO Urges Masks on Long Flights

The World Health Organization says countries should consider recommending masks for passengers on long flights. The Omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant has been detected in small but growing numbers and accounts for 28% of COVID cases in the U.S. It is the most transmissible Omicron subvariant detected so far. First Lady’s Skin Surgery

Jill Biden is having Mohs surgery today at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for a small skin lesion above her right eye. The procedure removes basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Doctors remove layers of skin to be examined under a microscope. Layer after layer is excised until all the cancer cells are gone. (Source: NPR, A. Archie, 1.11.23)
