Omicron-inclusive Booster for Kids

Pfizer has applied for emergency use authorization for its COVID booster designed to cover Omicron for children, ages 5 to 11. Three days ago, Moderna sought EUA for its own Omicron-inclusive booster for children 6 to 11. The CDC has said it expects these bivalent COVID boosters, which target BA.4 and BA.5, to be available for some children by mid-October. (Source: Reuters, 9.26.22)

Frozen Embryos and the Risk of Preeclampsia

Placing frozen embryos from in vitro fertilization into the womb is linked to a greater risk of potentially deadly high blood pressure problems during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia. The findings come from a Norwegian study that includes millions of pregnant women. The study is the largest to date to examine this issue.

Overall, the risk was low.

  • 7.4% with frozen embryos

  • 5.6% with fresh embryos

  • 4.3% with natural conception

However, after adjusting for age, existing high blood pressure, and obesity, the risk was 74% higher with frozen embryos.

About 1 in 12 women in the U.S. have high blood pressure during pregnancy, and 1 in 25 develop preeclampsia, with signs of kidney or liver damage. (Source: NBC News, K. Sullivan, 9.26.22)
