Blood Test for Sleep Deprivation

A blood test to measure lack of sleep could be available within two years. This could be used in cases of accidents related to fatigue. Australian researchers have identified five biomarkers in the blood that can detect with 99% accuracy whether someone has been awake for more than 24 hours. Setting a legal drowsy limit could be tricky to enforce. (Source: The Guardian, L. Geddes, 5.8.23)



Deep Sleep Could Boost Memory

Researchers at UC Berkeley have found that more deep sleep, or non-REM slow wave sleep, could preserve thinking function. Disrupted sleep has been associated with a faster build up of beta-amyloid, a protein in the brain linked to memory loss. Researchers wanted to test whether changes in sleep could make a difference. They studied 62 older adults without dementia and monitored their brain waves as they slept. Half of the group had high levels of amyloid on PET scan, the other half did not. In the high-amyloid group, more deep sleep was associated with better performance on memory tests. (Source: SciTechDaily, UC Berkeley, 5.7.23)



The Zero-Gravity Sleep Position

Sleeping with your head and legs raised above your heart could be better for your body. This position was developed by NASA to help astronauts balance their weight and relieve anatomical stress. With your frame at a 120 degree angle, there is less pressure on the heart and blood pumps more freely through the body. In addition, this position is easier on the hips and shoulders, it can reduce the risk of acid reflux, and it helps keep the airway open. (Source: Daily Mail, E. Joshu, 5.7.23)
