A Limited Supply of COVID Tests for Households
U.S. Households may order four free COVID tests from the government starting January 19. The postal service will deliver the tests within 7-10 days after the order is placed. The kits are expected to go to 160-million addresses. More from Reuters.
Genes May Play A Role in Loss of Smell and Taste with COVID
Researchers from the gene-testing company 23andMe have found a genetic pattern among people who lost their sense of taste or smell with COVID. They surveyed 70,000 customers of the 23andMe product in the U.S. and U.K. who had COVID. Alternate forms of two genes that code for the cells lining the nose increased the likelihood of losing smell or taste sensation by 11% with the illness. The study had some limitations: most of the participants were of European descent, the surveys relied on self-reporting, and smell and taste were not separate questions on the survey. “It helps answer the question of ‘why me’,” says researcher Danielle Reed in an NBC News report. She was not part of the study published in Nature Genetics.
