Inexpensive COVID Treatment for the World

Low cost versions of the Merck COVID pill molnupiravir could broaden access to the drug. The Medicines Patent Pool, backed by the United Nations, negotiated a deal with the pharmaceutical company to expand production by 30 generic drug manufacturers. In clinical trials, the regimen of 40 doses over 5 days reduces hospitalizations and deaths by 30%. As part of the deal, the medication will be distributed to more than 100 less-developed countries. The treatment would cost $700 in the U.S. and $20 in poorer nations. More from Reuters.

New Nursing Home Rules

Some states are requiring nursing home visitors to show a negative COVID test result before entering the facility to protect the vulnerable elderly population. Families are finding this difficult with scarce tests and testing supplies. “The latest restriction is essentially another lockdown,” says Andrea DuBrow in a Kaiser Health News report. Her mother has Alzheimer’s disease and is in a nursing home. “Time is being stolen from us.” Families also worry about the staffing shortages at long-term care facilities. Nearly 420,000 workers have left nursing homes since February 2020. So far, California, New York, and Rhode Island have instituted the new rules.

Pandemic Pounds

Americans got heavier during the first year of the pandemic, according to a survey of 3,400 adults. Nearly half of those polled admitted to weight gain. This was more likely for married, working, older men in the southern or western parts of the country, and for people who were overweight before the pandemic, had children at home, or had depression or anxiety.
