Remdesivir for outpatients
People with COVID in the outpatient setting can now get Remdesivir. Previously, Remdesivir was given to hospitalized patients only. The FDA approved the use in outpatients and expanded its indication for those 12 and older who weigh 88 pounds or more, have mild to moderate COVID, and are at high risk for severe illness. The FDA also amended the emergency use authorization to include children younger than 12 who weigh at least 8 pounds and are at high risk for severe illness. People would get the three-day, intravenous medication at an infusion center, a skilled nursing facility, or through home healthcare. More from UPI.
Boosters prevent Omicron, reduce hospitalization risk
The first three large U.S. studies to examine vaccine protection against Omicron show boosters help. One study looked at ER and urgent care visits in 10 states from August to January. Another study looked at death rates in 25 states. A third study looked at people who tested positive in December. In all three studies, three doses were more effective than two, especially if more than six months had passed since the second dose. “It really shows the importance of getting a booster dose,” says study author Emma Acorsi in an article from the AP.
