Post-Vaccine Myocarditis in Adolescent Boys

Based on voluntary reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System from December 2020 to August 2021, myocarditis within seven days of a second dose of mRNA vaccine was most common for boys ages 16 to 17. With the Pfizer vaccine, there were about 100 cases per million doses in this age group, compared to 70 cases for boys ages 12 to 15, and 50 cases with either Pfizer or Moderna for males ages 18 to 24. Almost all cases were hospitalized, received non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, and recovered by discharge. The age pattern raises the possibility of the role of testosterone, immune system mechanisms, or genetics. More in MedPage Today.

Brain Fog with COVID

Researchers have found a clue to why some people have lingering confusion after COVID. They analyzed the spinal fluid – the clear, colorless fluid that circulates around the brain and spinal cord – of 17 people who recovered from COVID but did not require hospitalization. They also had testing of thinking and concentration. The tests were done 10 months after infection. The 13 participants that had trouble remembering and staying focused had elevated levels of protein and unexpected antibodies in their spinal fluid. The four that did not have any thinking difficulties did not have these in their spinal fluid. The people who had the brain fog were also more likely to have other risk factors for impaired thinking, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. “It’s possible that the immune system, stimulated by the virus, may be functioning in an unintended pathological way,” says study author, Dr. Joanna Hellmuth, in an article from WebMD.

Aquatic Therapy Helps for Low Back Pain

Therapeutic aquatic exercise led to better back pain relief for up to 12 months compared to physical therapy. Researchers did a three-month, single blind, randomized clinical trial with 12-month follow up of 113 patients with chronic lower back pain. Participants were randomly assigned to get either aquatic therapy or physical therapy. The people in the aquatic therapy group had less disability and pain. More in Healio.
