Sequestered HIV Comes Out of Hiding with Cancer Drug
Treatment for HIV can make the virus undetectable in the bloodstream, but a sequestered reservoir remains. For that reason, people with HIV must stay on antiretroviral therapy for life. A small study of 32 patients with cancer and HIV shows that a cancer drug, Keytruda, can flush the HIV out of hiding. Keytruda harnesses the immune system to fight tumors. “This is an exciting advance, says president of the International AIDS Society, Adeeba Kamarulzaman, in an article from STAT News, “Being able to stop HIV from hiding is an important part of finding an HIV cure.”
Risk Factors for Long COVID
Some people with COVID have a range of symptoms, including lingering confusion, fatigue, and shortness of breath, weeks to months after their infections. Researchers followed 200 people for two to three months after COVID diagnosis. Circulating fragments of virus, antibodies directed at their own tissues, a resurgence of Epstein Barr virus were associated with an increased risk. Other correlations: type 2 diabetes and cough, women and neurological problems, and heart disease or pre-existing cough and loss of smell or taste. More in The Scientist.
Deaths Exceed Births in Michigan
In 2020 in Michigan, more people died (117,000) than were born (104,000). While heart disease and cancer were the top causes of death, 11,362 people died of COVID. More from the AP.
