Two Vaccines Advance
Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, Spikevax, received full FDA approval for adults and is now the second fully approved COVID vaccine in the U.S. Meanwhile, a vaccine by Novavax is up for emergency use authorization. It works differently than the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. It delivers nanoparticles of the virus’ spike protein to the immune system. It requires two doses, 21 days apart, and can be stored in the refrigerator. In clinical trials, it was 90% effective at preventing COVID infection. “The public can be reassured that Spikevax meets the FDA’s high standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing,” says acting FDA commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock in an article from Reuters. The Novavax vaccine has already received the equivalent to emergency use authorization in Europe and the equivalent to full approval in South Korea. More in STAT News.
