Presumed COVID Infection and Subsequent Antibodies

Researchers examined whether people who believe they had COVID actually have antibodies to the virus. They recruited nearly 600 participants via social media. Of the those who had tested positive with their illness, 99% had antibodies. About half of the people who believed they had COVID an average of 9 months prior had no evidence of antibodies. And 11% of the people who did not think they ever had COVID had antibodies. The study took place before the Omicron wave. More in MedPage Today.

Cancer Drug Renders COVID Vaccines Ineffective

People who get the widely used cancer drug rituximab/Rituxan up to a year before an mRNA COVID vaccine (Pfizer and Moderna) will not mount a strong antibody response to the vaccine. However, if the vaccine is given first, antibodies are generated and can last for months. The lymphoma drug targets immune cells called B cells. B cells make antibodies. More from Stanford Medicine.

Doctor Poisons

A London family court has ruled that a doctor in the U.K. poisoned his girlfriend and her parents by putting thallium in their coffee and tried to cover his tracks. The father died two days later. The girlfriend and her mother were hospitalized. The doctor and the girlfriend have a 10-year-old child together. This is an unusual ruling with the verdict delivered in civil court rather than criminal court. Thallium is a heavy metal with no taste or smell. Symptoms of thallium poisoning include nausea and vomiting, a painful numbness in the feet and hands, and hair loss. More in The Guardian.
