Stimulator Helps People Walk After Spinal Cord Injury

Michael Roccati’s spinal cord was severed in a motorcycle five years ago, leaving him paralyzed and without feeling in his legs. An electrical implant surgically attached to his spine and individual nerve fibers has made it possible for him to walk now. Typically, this type of spinal cord injury is too severe for functional recovery. “I was extremely surprised,” says Swiss neurosurgeon, Professor Jocelyn Bloch in a report from the BBC. “For the first time, we not only have an immediate effect,” she tells CNN, “but also, individuals with no sensation, no movement whatsoever, have been able to regain full standing and walking independently of the laboratory.” Roccati was one of three men to participate in a trial of the device. All three could walk independently with body weight support within a week of their surgeries. The technology is too new to be used routinely yet, and more clinical trials to demonstrate safety and effectiveness will be needed. “I don’t think we have enough evidence yet to know the best way to stimulate for the best outcomes,” Susan Karkema, PhD adds in the CNN report.

Omicron Wave Subsides

COVID cases and hospitalizations have declined, though deaths have increased over the past seven days. The U.S. is averaging 290,000 new cases a day, which is higher than any previous waves, but 63% lower than three weeks ago. Hospitalizations are down 19%. There are 2,462 new deaths each day on average in the U.S., an increase of 3% from the previous week. More from CNN.

Four States Plan to Lift Mask Mandates

Governors of Connecticut, New Jersey, and Delaware, and the Oregon health department have set timelines to end the school mask mandates. Dates range from late February to late March. The CDC has recommended that all students, staff, teachers, and school visitors wear masks. More from CNN.
