Heart Damage a Year After COVID

The first large study to examine what happens to the heart and blood vessels a year after COVID infection shows persistent effects. Researchers analyzed more than 11 million U.S. veterans’ health records. Among those who had COVID one year earlier, heart and blood vessel problems, such as heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythms, strokes, heart failure, and cardiac arrest, were increased compared to those without COVID. The risk was highest among those with a severe COVID illness, but even people who didn’t go to the hospital had more cardiovascular disease. “In the post-COVID era, COVID might become the highest risk factor for cardiovascular outcomes,” says cardiologist and biostatistician Dr. Larisa Tereshchenko in an article from Science. The researchers found the result held up across other risk factors. The abnormalities affected young people, people without diabetes or obesity, and non-smokers. The lead author worries these conditions will scar people for a lifetime.

Bob Saget’s Cause of Death

The family of the late comic actor Bob Saget says he died of head trauma. In a statement the family says the authorities have determined he “accidently hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it, and went to sleep.” More in Yahoo News. Certain types of head injury with bleeding can be deadly.

Prince Charles Has COVID...Again

Prince Charles has tested positive for COVID and is isolating. He received the test results just before a scheduled engagement to unveil a statue in front of a crowd. He and his wife attended a reception at the British Museum yesterday. This is Prince Charles' second COVID infection. He has received three doses of COVID vaccine. Camilla has tested negative. More from the BBC.
