Olympic Dope: What is Trimetazidine?

Trimetazidine is a medicine to prevent chest pain. It increases blood flow and endurance. Older people with severe heart disease can have a small improvement in exercise tolerance. The World Anti-Doping Agency categorizes it as a hormone and metabolic modulator. It improves the way the heart uses sugar. Trimetazidine is used commonly in Russia. The 15-year old Russian ice skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for the drug from a December 25 urine sample. The twice a day drug is manufactured in France, where it is also prescribed for dizziness and ringing in the ears. More from the AP.

Risk of Hospitalization Decreases for Newborns of Vaccinated Moms

A CDC report shows babies born to moms who receive their COVID vaccination during pregnancy have a 61% lower risk of being hospitalized in their first six months. Antibodies cross the placenta from mom to baby. The study looked at data from the Delta and Omicron waves. Of the babies who ended up in the hospital, 84% were born to unvaccinated mothers. There is no authorized COVID vaccine for infants. “Vaccination is a really important way to help protect these young infants,” says Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman in an NPR report.

Caffeine With Heart Benefits: Possible Mechanisms

A new study has identified specific proteins that caffeine interacts with to help the liver remove bad cholesterol from the bloodstream. Caffeine decreases the level of a protein called PCSK9, which breaks down receptors for bad cholesterol, LDL, in liver cells. With lower levels of PCSK9, more receptors are available, and more LDL gets cleared from the bloodstream. Caffeine also inhibits another protein, SREBP2, which also leads to less PCSK9. Ideal levels and sources of caffeine are yet to be determined, but this discovery could yield caffeine-like medications to lower cholesterol. More in New Atlas.
