Hospital Locks Down ICU for Staff Safety

Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City increased security and locked down its ICU following a protest and social media posts that criticized the care provided to a now deceased patient with COVID. An Oklahoma County judge granted the hospital a temporary injunction against a man who wrote threatening posts on Facebook. Doctors refused to provide certain treatments requested by the spouse, and the couple’s pastor called a specific doctor a murderer on social media and organized a protest outside the hospital. In addition, the doctor’s home address appeared in posts. “For anyone to criticize the integrity of those who [sic] sole purpose is saving lives, let alone accusing them of murder or financially benefitting from deaths of patients is patnetly false, it’s highly offensive to us, and should absolutely be condemned,” says Jean Hausheer of the Healthier Oklahoma Coalition COVID-19 Task Force in a report from KOCO.

Endometriosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk

Patients with endometriosis, where tissue normally lining the uterus grows outside the organ, are nearly four times as likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune arthritis, than those without endometriosis. This finding comes from a cohort study in Taiwan of 18,000 patients with endometriosis and a comparably matched group of 18,000 patients without the condition. The groups were followed from 2000 to 2013, and diagnoses of rheumatoid arthritis were noted from a national health database. This type of study cannot show cause or effect. Possible explanations include inflammation from the endometriosis leading to autoimmune reactions and genetic factors. More in Contemporary OB/GYN.

Childhood Sleep Problems May Persist

In a study in Pediatrics, researchers determined that 43% of children who have insomnia in childhood will also have it in their 20s and 30s. The researchers followed more than 500 kids from age 5 until they were 31. More than four in ten had persistent sleep troubles, and nearly two in ten continued to have intermittent insomnia. The team also found 27% of those who had issues as kids became healthy sleepers as adults. “Developing a consistent and calming bedtime routine that is maintained through childhood,” says Dr. Carey Lockhart in an article from HealthDay,” can create a stable routine and strong sleep health foundation.” About 25% of school-aged children have trouble falling or staying asleep.

Dick Vitale Has Vocal Cord Surgery

Sports broadcaster Dick Vitale had a three-hour operation on his vocal cords for a precancerous condition dysplasia. In a tweet, he called the procedure his “National Championship.” The surgeon used a 3-D printer to customize the surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital earlier this week. Vitale, 82, is known for his 41-year college basketball broadcasting career. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday and is recuperating in Florida. More from WCVB.
