Two Years Later, the Pandemic Eases
With the COVID-19 pandemic, 6 million people have died worldwide, and 1 million people have died in the U.S. Work and school were disrupted. Vaccines came. So did political divisions. However, hospitalizations have dropped 80% in the last six weeks. Case counts are at the lowest since last summer. Hospitals are no longer overflowing, but the pandemic has traumatized staff. Many people have resumed public activities without masks. More from the AP.
Diagnostic Tool for Autism
A community-based study shows a highly accurate tool for pinpointing autism. This could lead to diagnosis and intervention at earlier ages. The Social Attention and Communication Surveillance-Revised tool was studied in more than 13,500 toddlers ages 12 months to 24 months. The test, administered by trained professionals, observes early social communication behaviors. It predicted autism accurately 83% of the time, and correctly predicted no autism 99% of the time. However, the test only picked up 62% of the cases. It may be more useful as a repeated evaluation over time. More in MedPage Today.
The Diet of Older Americans Could Be Better
The diet of two out of three American adults age 65 and older is unhealthy, and diet quality has deteriorated over 20 years. Researchers looked at surveys of 11,000 people in this age group in the U.S. between 2001 and 2018. They compared the responses about eating habits to American Heart Association scoring systems. Older adults consumed more processed meats, sugary beverages, and salted foods, and fewer fruits and vegetables, fish, and whole grains. Unhealthy eating habits could worsen diet-related diseases among elders. More from UPI.
