WHO: Global Air Quality Is Subpar

The World Health Organization says the air quality for 99% of the global population doesn’t meet standards. The WHO updated its database on air quality across 6,000 municipalities. It says the air contains particles that can reach deep into the lungs, enter blood vessels, and cause disease. The WHO calls for a reduction in fossil fuel use. “After surviving the pandemic, it is unacceptable to still have 7 million preventable deaths and countless preventable lost years of good health due to air pollution,” says the WHO’s Dr. Maria Neira in an article from the AP.

Pandemic Health Habits and Patterns

The average body mass index (BMI) and obesity prevalence increased significantly among American adults during the pandemic. Average alcoholic drink days per month also increased. However, there were also higher rates of exercise and average sleep, and lower rates of smoking. More from HealthDay.

Balance Problems Related to Leg Nerve Issues

Two out of three older patients referred to balance centers turn out to have significant lower-limb neuropathy, a condition where the nerves in the legs don’t carry nerve signals well. In a study, among 164 people 65 and older at a balance referral center, 114 had peripheral neuropathy on testing. However, 72% of these patients had no awareness of the issue. Many also had additional conditions contributing to the balance problems, such as problems with the inner ear and brain. The findings were presented in a poster at the American Academy of Neurology meeting. More from MedPage Today.

One Man, 90 COVID Shots

A 60-year-old man in Germany received 90 COVID vaccines in an alleged ploy to obtain legitimate vaccine cards to sell to people who did not want to be immunized. His vaccinations went on for months in the eastern state of Saxony. The police caught him this month. The impact on his health is not yet known. More from the AP.
