Pig Virus in Transplanted Pig Heart


The pig heart that was transplanted into a man earlier this year was infected with porcine cytomegalovirus. The infection might have contributed to the man’s death, with the virus setting off widespread inflammation. Some fear xenotransplantation could set off a pandemic if a virus were to adapt inside the recipient and then spread to health care workers. More in MIT Technology Review.




Telemedicine abortions could see surge


Most U.S. abortions are induced with medication instead of surgery. The FDA made a rule change in December to allow patients to receive the pills by mail instead of in person. Telemedicine abortion provides are trying to figure out how to serve patients across the country as more states are expected to restrict abortion. More in STAT News.
