Boosters for Grade-Schoolers

The FDA gave emergency use authorization for the Pfizer COVID vaccine booster for children ages 5 to 11. To get a booster, the child's second shot of the primary series must be at least five months earlier. Pfizer presented data to the FDA indicating that antibodies are 36 times higher after a thrid shot in this age group. More from CNN.

Monkeypox Alert

The CDC is monitoring a monkeypox outbreak in the U.K. “I think we have some concern that there could be spread outside the U.K. associated with this,” says the CDC’s Jennifer McQuiston in an article from STAT News. Since May there has been one possible and seven confirmed cases. This is unusual and notable since human monkeypox cases are rare outside of West and Central Africa. The virus is transmitted through contact with virus-laced droplets, lesions, or clothing and linens. “You have two clusters that have no link to travel or to other people who are known to be associated with a recognized outbreak. It suggests there are unknown chains of transmission,” McQuiston adds.

New York Masks

New York City officials are urging masks in indoor settings as the city approaches high risk alert status for COVID transmission. Regardless of vaccine status or past infection, all are asked to wear face coverings in grocery stores, offices, and building lobbies. More from the AP.
