Monkeypox in more countries
Canada is now investigating 17 suspected cases of monkeypox in Montreal. Also, New York City is investigating a possible case. The U.K., Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Italy have reported confirmed monkeypox. Most of the infected persons are men 30 to 50 years old. Genetic analysis of the U.S. cases will determine if the virus matches what is being seen in Europe. The virus is rarely seen outside of Central and West Africa. More from STAT News.
CDC recommends booster for grade schoolers
The CDC’s vaccine practices advisory panel recommends that children ages 5 to 11 get a COVID vaccine booster five months after their second shot. The panelsist came down on the side of strongly recommending, favoring “should get the booster," as opposed to “may get the booster.” The vote was 11 to 1 with one abstention. More from STAT News.
Baby Formula Comeback
The head of the FDA says Abbott's shut down baby formula manufacturing facility could be up and running as early as next week, pending safety upgrades and certificates. Once it is reopened, it could take two months for supplies to return to stores. The Michigan plant has been closed since February due to contamination issues. More from the AP.
