Six children die of hepatitis

The mysterious hepatitis outbreak has spread to 36 states. Over the last seven months, 180 cases have been reported in the U.S. Six children have died. Adenovirus, a cold virus, has been detected in about half the cases. “It’s not common to see severe liver damage from and adenovirus,” says epidemiologist Melissa Nolan in an article from USA Today, “This could be a new form of adenovirus. Or it could be something completely new.”

More and more monkeypox

More than 100 cases of confirmed or suspected monkeypox are in Europe, but nearly 20 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks. The U.S. has two confirmed cases, and now a suspected case in Broward County, Florida. This latest case was related to international travel and remains isolated. More from Reuters.

Cannabis users need more sedation for procedures

Patients who use cannabis require more sedation for procedures to look into their stomach with a scope. “Patients didn’t have increased awareness or discomfort during procedures, but they did require more drugs,” says lead researcher Dr. Yasmin Nasser in an article from News Medical. Cannabis use was not associated with higher use of sedation during colonscopy. The stomach procedure generally required more sedation than colonoscopy because the inserted scope can cause a gag reflex.
