Hello, Doctor!
The media may approach you for an interview on a medical study.
Here is a question to ask yourself as you prepare to communicate information about the study:
Will my communication further public understanding?
Then ask yourself:
Is the study credible enough to justify public attention?
Will the public be able to understand the importance of the findings and whether they will bear on an individual’s behavior?
Will I avoid oversimplification? Such as characterizing interventions/behaviors as good or bad?
Will I represent the study’s overall conclusions and not focus on selected findings which could skew the picture?
In the next post of this series, I’ll go over some general guidelines for putting information from medical studies into context. Stay tuned!
